GALLERY ...

David Bowie
front of the mural "Man at a crossroads " ,
of Diego Rivera in the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
A picture Fernando Aceves of - 1997

Music has always been part of my life. It is one of the lead wires in seconds that transports me to a state of unconsciousness subversive. With it I can travel back and enjoy this in a click.

few days ago I had the opportunity to revive old ways of youth with a couple of good friends (J. Carlos and Gilberto), as we drove to know EXPO ROCK GALLERY in Colonia Condesa.

all started days before when we talked about record sales "catalog" in close proximity to the gallery, until then, was unknown to all . I proposed a visit to this new space in Mexico City where you can breathe pure, total and absolute rock, blues, hard rock, metal, R & B, jazz, among others, all captured, for 20 years, through the lens of Mexican photographer Fernando Aceves, and Baron Wolman, American photographer highlights from the decade of the 60 with collaboration for the magazine Rolling Stone .

Circling the streets of the Countess began to emerge memories as my time at university. However, it was entering the street from Atlixco that immediately sprang a sensation that caused me great joy as they remembered friends of the "prepared" with whom I lived many years, right on the corner of Michoacán and Atlixco. We used to meet at the home of Taissir weekends to listen to rock, blues, jazz, progressive, punk, metal, etc., and among all disks, which could be a strong feedback that united generations, concepts and thoughts .

Who was going to say that 22 years later would be born a few meters, just at 100, a place called EXPO ROCK GALLERY, where he would find virtually all soundtrack of my life made into images. A place where the mind experiences an impressive musical madness that makes us "descelofanear" a lot of vinyl like old times.

For his part, Fernando Aceves presents photographs of the singer William Bruce Bailey, better known as Axl Rose, dressed in kilt and with reference to nationality his father. Undoubtedly one of the best photographs that captures the most productive stage of Guns 'N' Roses in the early 90's.

We also met with the group Pink Floyd in the first two concerts held in Mexico, Foro Sol, in April 1994. Concerts causing too much euphoria in the audience live to see one of the most emblematic of progressive rock in her "Division Bell." Although the lineup and was not Roger Waters, the show that we could observe everything exceeded seen so far in Mexico. Although not much, and we began to breathe other musical airs of great importance in the history of rock ... --- although that day "pigs" have not taken flight ---.

heavy figures If we talk, The Rolling Stones are more than present in the gallery through photographs that bring studio sessions, concerts and filming one of his videos (I Go Wild - 1995), in the former Convent of San Lazaro, in Candelaria de los Patos. Through these, we see a background and textures with the technique of video would be impossible.

Rolling Near the vampire is more: Peter Murphy. A presence in a picture that makes it look odd and, therefore, unrecognizable to me with everything and the card data. Nothing like a "vampire" I've ever seen three times in concert.

If it is blues, Eric Clapton makes an appearance in two stages of life through different photos. Although I must admit that one of them I think the most significant as it brings us back to the only concert that has given our country "Slow Hand", at the Foro Sol, the last of her "Reptile Tour" in October 2001. Undoubtedly, one of the best concerts that I have witnessed in Mexico and that is unforgettable for me to have closed with the theme "Somewhere over the rainbow" with the light show to the public accompanied the guitarist. The faces of surprise expressed by Clapton and Nathan East've only seen during the second concert of Paul McCartney who recently gave at the Foro Sol By the way, I must say that clear and cold night in 2001, Eric Clapton was preceded by the intervention of the group "Toto" who came led by Steve Lukather, wonderful.

David Bowie is another in the gallery through a photograph, which is unprecedented, achieved by Fernando Aceves in 1997. Bowie is contemplating and analyzing the Diego Rivera mural "Man at a Crossroads" at the Palace of Fine Arts .

It achieves a stunning optical illusion. At a glance it seems that Bowie is one of those paintings honoring the nickname "The Chameleon." To our knowledge, no one has made a photo of the singer with these characteristics, which tells us that life and photography are made of moments that Fernando has captured through the lens. So much so that David Bowie himself has given recognition through a two-page letter written in his own handwriting, stamped with his signature.

For its part, the work of Baron Wolman presents a series of pictures that caught my attention. They manages to catch eyes that are hard to find artists. As in the case of Janis Joplin that shows us a very special light and joy in their eyes. Never seen her like this and it is not good lighting (that is appreciated and well) is really very expressive this image.

also find Mick Jager in a shot that, although not to my liking by his expression, his eyes again a magnet for the viewer. I'm sure you will make more than one turn because we all know that Mick has clear eyes, but that black and white photography that emphasizes go.

is unusual to find a Pink Floyd in their early days, when rock was becoming a large-scale theatrical and musical earthquake that would shake all the shows later. In EXPO ROCK GALLERY Baron presents an iconic image of the group just in time to take off the charts on EMI, and his first big hit "Arnold Lane" .

youth if it comes, BB King could no longer be present throughout history and a reflection of those years he made himself known as the "King of the Blues" in the early 60 .

Anyway. I could spend hours talking about U2, Rod Stewart, Bono, Ozzy Osbourne, The Police, Sting, Kiss and others who will see in that precious space. However I needed and very worthwhile, each living their own experience and relive the sound and smell that occurs when removing a disc from its case made on bond paper, matte or gloss, and admire those works cover art made of cardboard "Caplan", having to face all those photographs.

Surely a place like EXPO ROCK GALLERY was needed in Mexico. Only abroad could be seen musical photography exhibitions and / or rock, although historic record stores in Mexico as "Zorba", "Super Sound", "Rock Shop", "Hits 70", "AB Records", " Disco Sound "," Disk Memory "," Discolandia "," The Great Disco "," Tower Records "(beginning), among others, were what gave us little photographic materials owned by the same owners. So before you even dream to have one of those pictures hanging on the wall of our room.

was not until 2000 when photography first focused on the music makes a real recognition in Mexico by Fernando Aceves and his statement: "The Rolling Stones" at the Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition consisted of 32 exposures in color and 11 black and white, taken between 1994 and 1998, during the group presentations from Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Peacock Wording For Invitation

The Fisher King (1)

by Jorge García Negrete ...

Notes on
radio in Mexico ...

Only those who have been standing in front of a microphone has felt the adrenaline shot of the radio. And like all emotions, the body craves more and more, and without realizing it, one can become addicted.

Throughout my life I have met a handful of broadcasters who have written the history of this medium. Characters that have achieved all the fame, they have achieved everything and that, likewise, end up losing everything: family, friends and a compass.

Inevitably, I is the image of Jack Lucas talking to his fans through the microphone, converted into a small God, without showing the least respect for the feelings of his listeners.

The Fisher King

have no idea how I was impressed with the image of God this little rundown, with his coat full of vomit, lying on the streets, living the reality of the homeless of New York. I venture to say that Terry Gilliam on The Fisher King, managed to capture that image the rise and decline that has marked most radio hosts in the world.

also reminded me, the book "In Search of Excellence in Radio."

If you agree, let me share with you some of the characters like The Fisher King I've ever known.

Robes, Pajamas and Slippers

radio My first encounter was face to face with Rod and Bolivar Sergio Domínguez, drivers of a talk show pioneer 70 and 80: "Gowns, Pajamas and Slippers "(B, P and P).

was a morning show is broadcast Monday through Friday, from 7:00 to 9:00 am, via radio 590 The Panther, a radio station Radio Core Mil (NRM). They did something unthinkable to speak beyond the time, frequency, and the name of the song and performer. Initiated a trend that would mark the 80 and 90 in our country, "the radio is what happens between songs and commercials." It was impressive to see the response from people when they engaged in "Las Mañanitas" on several tunes, adjusting the lyrics to the tune of songs from various genres. All enjoyed the greetings to "The Old Grumpy, The Beautiful Girls and The Old piped." They talked about everything and nothing. Invented, even a planet called Krypton (licensed creative plagiarism), scenario in which shielded to social and political criticism in a country where there was no freedom of information.

addition to his work in robes, Sergio Rod also was head of the NRM and production was the driver of Dialogues Naked, a talk show which won a National Journalism Award.

Sergio worked alongside Rod and I was impressed by his personality charming and sympathetic, no one could resist when he opened his mouth was like a spell that generated sympathy without question. But he was also a very lonely man, suspicious that little by little, he lost the compass. I remember once

where NRM managers asked a market research. Sergio dare to invent the results without applying any research tool. When they discovered this fact, absent from work for a few days because he was "arrested" at his own request. Sergio was an honorary position in the police at the time of Madrazo. The "Black" gave these awards to media personalities for their endorsement and generate a good image for their security unorthodox tactics. It was very fun to watch him get dressed in the uniform of commander. Whenever I needed time off, I asked her "police commanders" who invented a arrest to be incommunicado for the time as the waters calmed. Of course, that such an "arrest" was like a holiday in luxury hotel.

On another occasion, Camerino, responsible for the cleanliness of the facilities of the NRM was accused of stealing a watch from the Director General, Carlos Flores Alvarez. Where the dismissal was to be consummated, the poor janitor confessed reluctantly seeing Sergio Rod take the Director's desk clock. When Sergio Rod was called to account, simply replied that he had seen and that, seeing broken, decided to take it to a watchmaker to repair it and to give a surprise to Mr. Flores.

Its charm and friendliness made it impossible not to believe the many stories he invented where the line between reality and fantasy was diluted.

I understand that reality is largely perception. But, never ceased to amaze me how there are characters that reality and fiction overlap shamelessly, reaching even to be convinced of its imaginary construction.

had spent almost a year since I met Sergio Rod and I went with the hope of being hired by the NRM. He was responsible for maintaining this illusion, occasionally announcing that my place was already authorized. When asked how would the process, appeared offended by the bureaucracy of the company, without giving credit to the fact that I had not been paid yet. He took the phone and spoke angrily to Mr. Martinez, to claim the lack of compliance on my contract. Pawed, his voice rising, threatening, negotiated, compromised and always hung up the phone with the promise that it would take immediate action on the matter. At that, one could not but feel grateful for their interest and commitment he put into resolving my job. Over time, I learned that the other side of the line there was never anyone. They were difficult negotiations Monologues without any recipient. The so-called Mr. Martinez did not even know of my existence. Sergio was talking to anyone, accompanied by the monotonous sound of the telephone line. I was not the first nor the only one, but if it was part of the larger group and knew their tricks, however, having followed him in high esteem.

There were also moments closer to tragedy than comedy. And to add depth to this blog, let us quote the classics, the voice of Karl Marx, on 18 Brumaire:

Hegel says somewhere all great events and personalities in world history occur, as it were, twice. But forgot adding: once as tragedy and then as farce. Karl Marx.

Nucleo Radio Mil

In stage tragedy, Sergio had an affair with the size of your nose that led to plastic surgery. After the transaction is locked in a depression in the room of his apartment, and refused to eat or receive anyone. Her partner called me and asked me to come visit. So I did and to my surprise, Sergio not only opened the door but accepted food during my visit. His girlfriend came in and was trying to interact with him, but Sergio was asked to leave us alone. Rather than consider it an honor, it seemed strange attitude to who should be the person closest to him. It made me think of the level of loneliness and alienation that suffered one of the voices most followers of the radius of 80 in Mexico City.

in stage comedy, Sergio NRM left and went to Radio Formula, Dominguez Bolivar convincing to do the same. The following anecdote referred me Bolivar himself, who was tired of the lies and fraud of Sergio. He warned that if he made one of their traps, give up the project-company "B, PyP.

He once organized a trip to Acapulco with a group of listeners. Bolívar was a more introverted than his partner. Sergio asked that it was not shipped to leave the tour group at the port of Guerrero.

As if it were the product of a long script and tested repeatedly, Sergio invented an emergency in Mexico City and traveling back half, leaving his partner to drift, by the group of tourists.

As he returned to Mexico City, Radio Formula Bolivar resigned and returned to the NRM.

I always thought that this decision saved his life Bolivar, as in the earthquake of 85, he was no longer on Radio Formula. If it was Sergio who was Rod, which continued broadcasting during the earthquake and the Sept. 19 fell among the debris of that radio station, lost her life. Sergio

always said he would die before the microphone and made it.

With his death ended one of the most vital and innovative radio in Mexico.

died in a time of high popularity in his career as a radio host. But it did so without his closest friends, no close relatives.

Sergio typical phrase still echoes in my ears:

"Thank God, this country still habemos social classes. Although we are all the same clay, is not the same Catrin that cowboy."

Jack Lucas's image I erase the memory of Sergio Rod, who was deeply loved and respected, despite his multiple lies, myths and hoaxes.

And Gabo is the Beatles ...

Gabriel Garcia Marquez - December 16, 1980

Posted by Beto Cronopio ...
Press Releases 1980 - 1984, Mondadori, Spain

That's right: the only common nostalgia that one has with his children are the songs of the Beatles. Each one for different reasons, of course, and with a different pain, as always with poetry.

I do not forget that memorable day in 1963 in Mexico when I first heard it in a conscious one Beatles song. Since then I discovered that the universe was contaminated by them. In our house in San Angel, where he barely had to sit on, there were only two songs: a selection of Debussy preludes and the first Beatles album.

Throughout the city, at any time, you could hear a cry of crowds, "Help, I need somebody." Someone raised again by the time the old theme that the best musicians are those of the second letter in the catalog : Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Bartok. Someone repeated the same nonsense as always: to include a Bosart. Alvaro Mutis, who like all great scholar of the music has an incurable weakness for symphonic bricks, insisted on including Bruckner. Another was to repeat again the battle for Berlioz, who fought against it because I could not get over the superstition that is oiseau de malheur, ie croaker. Instead, I strive, since then, including the Beatles. Emilio Garcia Riera, who agreed with me and is a critic and film historian with a little supernatural lucidity, especially after the second drink, he said in those days: "I hear the Beatles with some fear, because I feel I'm going to remember them for the rest of my life. "is the only case I know of someone with enough foresight to realize that I was experiencing the birth of their nostalgia.

One then entered the studio of Carlos Fuentes, and I was typing with one finger of one hand, as it always has, in the midst of a dense cloud of smoke and insulated from the horrors of the universe Beatles music at full volume. (....)

this afternoon, thinking all this against a bleak window where the snow falls, with more than fifty years above and still not know very well who the fuck I'm not here, I have the impression that the world was like from my birth until the Beatles started singing. Everything changed then. The men were allowed to grow his hair and beard, the women learned to undress naturally, changed the way they dress and love, and began the liberation of sex and drugs to dream. Were deafening years of the Vietnam war and rebellion university. But above all, it was hard learning a different relationship between parents and children, the beginning of a new dialogue between them that had seemed impossible for centuries.

rescued The National Music Library Music Library XELA broadcaster, a unique collection of more than 80 thousand works of symphonic, chamber and vocal repertoire contained in 16 000 446 33 original albums and 45 rpm , among which were discovered unique interpretations and considered valuable, told Chronicle Alvaro Hegewisch, director of that institution.

Considered an exclusive collection for their high rate of healing, "is sure to enrich the cultural and historical heritage of Mexico," said Hegewisch, who announced that the acquis is integrated through numerous editions noncommercial recordings of concerts broadcast live by Radio Nederland and other little-known important figures such as Luis Herrera de la Fuente, Eduardo Mata and Candelario Huizar.

"The value of this collection is priceless and will recover part of the twentieth century musical memory in the country and the possibility that it is accessible to specialized music lovers and young audiences," he said.

18 DEGREES. XELA history began with a group of friends who gathered to listen to classical music, then decided to collect LP's and finally decided to buy a frequency Share their equipment and the July 5, 1940 began XELA transmissions under a slogan: "Good music from Mexico City."

The station, considered a pioneer in the genre, continuously transmitted for 62 years until his disappearance on January 1, 2002.

The closure sparked controversy and numerous criticisms of the arguments offered leading to the market, giving way to a diametrically different station: Estadio W 830 and later Capital Radio, as preserved until now.

Among the programs are reminded of the station: Time symphonic crown, transmitting works around 15:00 hours Sunday Mass with Gregorian chants parts, and Disco of the collector, broadcasting exclusive footage of great composers. Additionally there were music appreciation spaces dedicated to Mexican composers, baroque music, sacred and outstanding soloists.

The material now is tucked away in the vaults of the National Sound Archive at a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius and 40 percent relative humidity. MEXICAN JEWELRY

. When the station stopped working, many wondered about the fate of his collection and for years was thought lost, some speculated that it purchased or destroyed. However, in 2008 the family Fernandez Prieto acknowledged that he had protected the material in a warehouse.

The material acknowledged Alvaro Hegewisch, were stacked in cardboard boxes and their general condition was acceptable, although some LP's were damaged, with cracks, tears and detachment of pieces, which in turn will be restored, since the vinyl record is a stable and less vulnerable, unlike the compact disc, "he said.

XELA The collection, detailed, with discs donated by Mexican composers and performers, including many of these have not been reissued on CD, and it is considered that could be used as unique versions for editing, detailed Alvaro Hegewisch.

Among the musical gems are discovered flagship titles Mexican performers as the version of "Violin Concerto" by Brahms, under the leadership of director Luis Herrera de la Fuente, "La Suite Iberia" by Albeniz, played by pianist Miguel García Mora, in the legendary series Musart.

In Candelario Huizar, one of the great orchestrators Mexicans, is the version of their works "peasant", "Symphony 4 Cora "and" Symphony 2 Ochpaniztli 'led by Francisco Savin leading the Orchestra of Jalapa.

are also some recordings of the singer Maria Bonilla, whose recordings are treasured by collectors, as their album of covers leader Schumann, Brahms, Wolf and Schubert.

And the notorious Mexican director Eduardo Mata found live recordings of concerts in Holland, "The dawn of Funny" by Ravel, "The Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Sergei Rachmaninoff.

However, he acknowledged, these findings are the beginning of a first approach the material.

default. One of the virtues of this collection is that much of his material was played only once since the station's policy was to acquire and protect the original material, in their broadcasts only used reel tape recordings, Hegewisch said.

Another advantage, he acknowledged, is that the material was not alienated by any individual, because it certainly would have hindered their access, and surely the cost would have done invaluable, he said.

This material will, in time, their total to 96 Khz scan for 24-bit range used for preservation, which will public access to the Music Library. "So lucky to be able to hear Eduardo Mata, one of the great Mexican composers, recordings inconseguibles far," said .

For now, the official said, the material is in a vault and is making the identification of the material to find the gems it contains.

The first disc in the collection corresponds to the opera "Faust" by French composer Charles Gounod, performed by Eugene Conley and Eleanor Steber in a production of the Metropolitan Opera Association.

But at first glance reveals the musical tradition discs with Wilhelm Franz Schubert at the piano, the "Symphony no. 5 in E minor "PI Tchaikovsky under the direction of Leopold Stokowski, or" The Goldenberg Variations "of Johann Sebastian Bach with Glenn Gould on piano.

Meanwhile, in the website of the National Sound Archive is a preliminary inventory, but once completed the analysis of material will be posted all his treasures, he said. Finally

Alvaro Hegewisch said that so far has yet formalized the agreement with rights holders of the material, so it is not known if they will sign as a gift or bailment.

"The capital city is the laboratory of a society that lives in the extreme"

City Confidential:
chronic criminals, vagrants and others ...

By ARTURO GARCIA Hermandez

Mexico City's many cities. In all, one is more interested in the writer JM Servin, one that attracts me suffer and both a living in the red note, that of the subcultures that flourish in the suburbs of the outlaw, marginalization and impunity, a city that fascinated by many things, but at the same time can be repellent, harsh and cruel if you can not adapt and flow with it .

In this city where the population hanging from the rope that binds him with the criminal legal writes in his latest book City Confidential: chronic offenders, vagrants and other people without a future , published in Rafters independent label. Makes an eloquent title wink, affinity and admiration, the book LA Confidential, the American James Elroy.

- Has not been sufficiently told this city? Where the need?

"I have been, but its edges are too many to believe that already said it all. Has a life that becomes too rapid, even in the eyes of more experienced writers. Although he has been told, I think that for some time to date speaks of its most kind, has been idealized as a world class city, the level of Paris and Berlin, but it is not. Has both much richer and interesting to treat than the dens of the Condesa or Roma. From the marshes, from the underworld, from the perspective of leperaje, there are many things that are counted. It is a laboratory of a society that lives in the extreme and also wherein lies an undeniable social force that gives an opportunity for literary exercises as I am presenting, where citizens and writers are experimenting all the time.

In particular, "I am interested in urban picaresque, from common criminal to all those social fabric that has a lot to do with corruption and double standards of the Mexican, the contradictions of that part of town which says much about our idiosyncrasies. I watch as you would a pathologist or a forensic psychiatrist, I am interested in their view of transgression, of the underworld, its social history from the people and what has generated over the years, a society in love with illegality, the result of profound social and economic differences, with parallel events such as street vendors, crime, insecurity, but also through silence, chacota, indolence and cábula. It is not a government issue or another, but historical.

From the perspective of JM Servin, the phenomena mentioned are the resistance and self-protection response by the population these areas to the fact that the city has been taken from them somehow. We intend to sell that is democratic, but where impunity prevails and illegality because of the profound inequalities .

- Transgression in the city is thus a way of questioning the power?

"As far as maximum and minimum, it is always a challenge to power, because there is something in its exercise is not doing to relate to a more healthy society.

- register Why, why tell it?

-telling is more important to let it pass by. Are many important things happening which we must have a record, can not be only at the expense of the banality of television pundits. If a commitment have literature and journalism is to record the historic moment, its today, its here.

With City Confidential, JM Servin also wanted to recognize and value the tradition of journalism police, the red note began to be in Mexico in the nineteenth century, at the time of the Reformation. To this tradition belong Manuel Payne, Vicente Riva Palacio, with The Red Book, "and thereafter we have a lot of writers who have practiced this kind proscribed: Martin Luis Guzman, Ignacio Manuel Altamirano, El Zarco ; Ibagüengoitia Jorge, Jose Revueltas, Ricardo Garibay, and Sergio González Rodríguez, authors have drawn on the red note.

In recent times, young journalists have forgotten that journalism, it seems demeaning, while one of the most brilliant social history of the country and the city has been written in this genre .

On the other hand we have the Populibros The Press, "where through such journalism written glorious pages in this city, through reporters such as David Garcia Salinas, El Guero Téllez, José Ramón Garmabella and photojournalism from one of the great Mexican artists of all time, Enrique Metinides. "

self-described writer and freelance journalist , self taught, which has sought ways to write only what he likes or interests in favor of subjective self-referential journalism .

- How circumvents the risk of becoming the hero of their stories?

"But I am, but the story that is always above me, I try to tell it so that the reader does not think of me, but I'm telling.

The saturation of commercial music drowns independent cultural proposals ...

He noted that mass media have contributed to the lack of independent publishing. "In radio and television there is almost no possibility of spreading the full repertoire of great wealth, except in those cultural and university stations, but for the mass media do not exist," he said.

"The media have other types of interests in shaping people's taste, and are responsible for" forming a taste of annihilation upon us, however, opted for independent publishers will continue to enrich the knowledge of being human, "he said.

noted that Mexico is a country rich in culture, where there is the slightest interest in recovering and preserving the musical tradition established by teachers who remain unknown to our eyes.

MORE SPACES. Organized by the Mexican Association of Producers, Promoters and Distributors Independent Music (Ampprodim) the fair will disseminate high-quality independent productions produced in Mexico and abroad six record companies.

"There is a clear need to produce and distribute material from classical and traditional music, in a market where trading fees seek economic goals outweigh any cultural reasons ", he added.

Pentagram explained that only has a series of 650 titles in its catalog, but commercially only display about 150 titles in the library Gandhi, "so we have a serious problem: we make albums, produce and not we have a way of how to sell it. "

One can produce good or bad music, the problem is how to reach the public, how to make the right product reaches the consumer. "We must create spaces that bring us closer to our audience, and there is no point producing discs so that they remain in the cellar, "he noted.

Pentagram Among the new features offered in the fair are the albums Tavern and other places, Roque Dalton, and Two Voices, Daniel Viglietti and Mario Benedetti.

album also submit anonymous Intimate loving the unknown, Nayeli Nesme, an anthology of songs by Argelia Fragoso, Cuban singer who recorded a duet with old troubadours of the island, and you will have access to the disks Mexican Zarzuela Concert and songs of Spain, in the tenor voice of the writer Carlos Montemayor.

The fair will take place all weekend 2010 and will start next Saturday and Sunday July 31 August 1 in the Cafeteria The Victrola. Coahuila No. 49, Colonia Roma from 10:00 to 19:00. Free admission. Further information phone 5564 3894 5564 3877 and
